Today, we’re keeping up with the Jonses – Luka Jones, that is. Playing Ryan on the hit HULU series, Shrill, Jones talks about his experience on the series, his impressive list of former co-stars, and what he’s looking forward to in 2020.
The Tidbit: Fans are loving your character of Ryan on HULU’s Shrill. What’s been the best part of working on this series?
Luka Jones: The best part of working on the series is the people. I feel lucky to be working with so many talented people. They are all so lovely and funny and great and that makes it such a pleasure to come to work every day.
TT: In addition to Aidy Bryant, you’ve worked with some of the most talented women in comedy, including Jessica St. Clair, Christina Applegate, and Maya Rudolph. What’s the something you’ve learned from working with their comedic chops?
LJ: I’ve been truly fortunate to work with some of the best people in the business. Each of them has brought an incredible work ethic to the different projects. And they have all been such seasoned professionals that it’s been impossible not to watch and learn from them. Aidy, Maya, Christina, Jessica, and Lennon Parham all sort of taught me different things on set. But mostly just getting to do scenes with them has forced me to up my game because they are always bringing everything they have (with all of their funniness) to the work that we have done together.
TT: What advice do you have for someone looking to break into the entertainment industry; specifically into the field of comedy?
LJ: My advice to anyone getting into comedy is to find a community wherever they are — whether it’s LA, NYC, Chicago or elsewhere — and get a lot of stage time so you can figure out what works for you in terms of performing and finding your comedic voice and rhythms. Being part of a comedy theater like UCB or Second City can help because you end up spending so much time working and playing with deeply funny people and trying stuff out on stage with them.
TT: What are you currently working on? What’s been your favorite role to date?
LJ: Season 2 of Shrill comes out next month. And I just did a film called He’s The One that will be premiering at Sundance in January. It’s difficult to choose a favorite role, I’ve genuinely loved them all. But if I had to choose a current favorite, I’d choose Ryan, the character I’m playing on Shrill. It’s been interesting playing a character that has comedic and more dramatic moments. And it’s been fascinating watching people’s reaction to the character.
TT: What are you most looking forward to in 2020? Any resolutions?
I’m looking forward to having people see season 2 of Shrill. We all put a lot of work and love into it while shooting it this summer in Portland. I’m excited to see how people react. I’m not a big resolutions person, but I’m looking forward to creating a project of my own in 2020 and continuing to enjoy spending time with family and friends.
