The Beauty of Unplugging

Last Friday, I came home from work all jazzed to sit on my couch and binge-watch Breaking Bad. This dream was immediately crushed when I returned home to find that the WiFi and cable weren’t working, therefore I couldn’t stream Netflix. This is the definition of a First World problem, but it has been a long time since I stayed in on a Friday night without the Internet to play with.

It was almost a relief not to have things to stream and social media to look at. I was able to leave my electronics aside and focus on other projects that may have taken a backseat. So, how did I entertain myself sans screens? First, I read some of a book that I’ve been meaning to start forever. Of course, I got sucked in and was reminded how much I enjoy reading. Second, I spent a few hours simply creating things (see below!) Little pieces of art that I’ve never use for anything, but a way to flex my creative muscle and get my juices flowing. I swear, this night of being unplugged helped reset my brain and give me a fresh take on a new week.

Here’s a list of things to do to break away from the screens:

  1. Read a book
  2. Write in your journal or write a story
  3. Re-organize your closet
  4. Minimize and get rid of things you no longer need
  5. Play a board game
  6. Draw or paint something; create a Postsecret
  7. Bake
  8. Exercise
  9. Clean the house
  10. Actually talk to your family members
